Fraud Alert: German Banks Warn of Scam Letters Stealing PINs
Police are warning German bank customers about a current scam involving fraudulent letters. The letters instruct customers to update their online banking via a QR code, leading to a website where personal information, including debit card PINs, is requested.
The scam involves letters appearing to come from legitimate banks like us bank, boa, or pnc bank, asking customers to schedule a call with an alleged personal advisor. During the call, customers are persuaded to agree to the creation of a digital debit card in their banking app. Unbeknownst to them, this allows unknown individuals to create digital debit cards for their accounts and make withdrawals.
Authorities advise customers to be cautious of any unsolicited requests to update online banking, especially via a website with a QR code. They remind customers that banks do not typically ask for full debit card PINs or other sensitive information online.
The police urge customers to remain vigilant and report any suspicious letters or calls to their local authorities. If in doubt, customers should contact their bank directly using official contact details to verify any requests.
