French Police Arrest ShinyHunters Hacker Group Leader After Kering Data Breach
French police have arrested five individuals, including the suspected leader of the ShinyHunters hacker group, following a data breach at luxury fashion company Kering. The group, which claimed responsibility for the incident, accessed customer service data from several of Kering's high-end brands. Kering has denied negotiating with the hackers, but reports suggest otherwise.
The breach, confirmed by Kering in June 2025, compromised customer data including names, dates of birth, phone numbers, email addresses, and spending details. However, no personal financial information was affected. The hackers initially accessed Gucci's systems in 2024, stealing 43 million records. Kering's Salesforce CRM was the entry point for this latest breach.
Balenciaga was reportedly in negotiations to pay a €750,000 ransom to ShinyHunters but later refused to meet their demands. The group managed to obtain data from Balenciaga, Brioni, and Alexander McQueen, totaling nearly 13 million records. Kering confirmed the breach, describing it as 'limited', and notified affected customers and regulators.
The arrests of the ShinyHunters group members, including their alleged leader, follow Kering's confirmation of the data breach. While the extent of the breach is still being investigated, it's clear that customer data was affected. Kering has denied negotiating with the hackers, but reports suggest otherwise. The luxury fashion group has assured customers that no financial information was affected and has taken steps to notify those impacted.
