Funke Digital Bolsters Food Segment with Kitchen Stories Acquisition
Funke Digital, a prominent German media group, has bolstered its presence in the food segment by acquiring Kitchen Stories, a popular Berlin-based cooking platform, on October 6, 2025. This acquisition follows a series of strategic moves by Funke, making it one of the largest digital publishers in the food sector in the DACH region.
Kitchen Stories, founded in 2013 by Mengting Gao and Verena Hubertz, has seen several ownership changes. Initially, BSH Hausgeräte, a Bosch subsidiary, acquired a majority stake in 2017. In 2024, investor Fabian Siegel took over before Funke Digital's recent acquisition.
The platform's CEO, Alexander Bauer, now leads the company, which employs 28 people. Kitchen Stories' app, featuring recipes and editorial content, has been downloaded over 25 million times, reflecting its popularity. Verena Hubertz, one of the founders, left the company in 2020 to pursue a political career and is now the Federal Minister for Housing, Urban Development and Building.
Funke Digital's acquisition of Kitchen Stories strengthens its position in the food segment and allows for reaching a broader audience with innovative offerings and digital solutions. With recent purchases and the relaunch of its 'Leckerschmecker' portal, Funke has solidified its status as one of the largest digital publishers in the food sector in the DACH region.
