G-SHOCK's reconstruction of the 1983 DW-5000R keeps the original design intact

In celebration of its 40th anniversary, Japanese watchmaker Casio has released a standard-issue recreation of the beloved DW-5000 digital watch, the DW-5000R-1A. This new timepiece is a faithful reissue of the first-gen DW-5000C-1A from 1983.

Key Features of the DW-5000R-1A

The DW-5000R-1A boasts a stainless steel case with a screw-back and a flat bezel, a departure from the original's resin case. The case size measures 48.9mm x 42.3mm, with a thickness of 13.1mm, making it slightly larger than the original but smaller than some current members of the 5000 family such as the DW-5600. The case height has been increased to 42.3mm from 41.6mm.

The bezel and band are made from resin, specifically bio-resin, a more eco-friendly material. The DW-5000R-1A is equipped with a variety of features including a stopwatch, countdown timer, alarm, flash alert, full auto-calendar, and the Super Illuminator LED backlight.

Improved Battery Life and Water Resistance

Unlike the original DW-5000, the DW-5000R-1A's battery life has been improved to a impressive 5 years. Additionally, the watch boasts a water resistance of 200m, ensuring durability in various water activities.

Availability and Pricing

The DW-5000R-1A is currently available in the international market but has not yet landed on the United States G-SHOCK site. The watch is expected to cost $230, making it the most expensive screw-back watch in the current lineup.

Other Anniversary Releases

Alongside the DW-5000R-1A, Casio also unveiled a modernized update on the original DW-5000 from 1983 and a smartwatch version of the digital watch. These releases are part of the brand's ongoing celebration of its 40th anniversary, which has also seen the launch of new timepieces and innovations on old classics.

The DW-5000R-1A's alarm and hourly time signal indicators are located on the right side of the dial, a departure from the original's placement. The watch's design maintains the classic aesthetic while incorporating modern improvements, making it a must-have for both long-time G-SHOCK fans and newcomers alike.
