Zeit AI: From a Chance Encounter to Major Success

In the summer of 2024, Leopold von Waldthausen and Marvin Bornstein founded Zeit AI, a startup that has since made waves in the automotive industry and agricultural trading. The journey of Zeit AI, however, began much earlier and in an unexpected manner.

Von Waldthausen, a 19-year-old entrepreneur, had already made a name for himself with his first startup, Weview - a video review platform for product reviews. During a visit to the Y-Combinator, he crossed paths with Sam Altman, who was leading the accelerator at the time and had founded OpenAI. On the parking lot, Altman was gracious enough to give von Waldthausen his demo day badge. Little did Altman know, this seemingly insignificant act would set the course for Zeit AI's future.

With Altman's badge in hand, von Waldthausen found himself in the Y-Combinator's hallowed halls. He used the story of obtaining Altman's badge as part of his application for the Summer Batch 2024. To his surprise, his application was accepted, marking a significant milestone for Zeit AI.

The founders wasted no time. Within eight weeks, they developed the first product of Zeit AI, which would later be the catalyst for their initial success. The product was based on agentic AI technology, a cutting-edge approach that allows autonomous software agents to actively pursue defined goals, make independent decisions, and support complex processes beyond simple question-answering systems. These agents combine perception, planning, and action to operate effectively in dynamic environments.

With their first product in hand, von Waldthausen and Bornstein set out to secure their first major clients. Their efforts paid off, as they managed to secure these clients within ten weeks of Zeit AI's inception. The clients, primarily from the automotive industry and agricultural trading, have remained loyal to this day.

Von Waldthausen's encounter with Altman didn't end on the parking lot. He later met with Marc Samwer in a café near the Y-Combinator to discuss potential collaborations. Despite the hacking question that arose during his application process, von Waldthausen's tenacity and innovative ideas were too compelling to ignore.

Today, Zeit AI continues to push the boundaries of AI technology, providing solutions for some of the most complex challenges in the automotive industry and agricultural trading. The startup's success is a testament to the power of innovation, determination, and a little bit of serendipity.
