Ghana and UK Team Up to Advance AI in Africa
Ghana and the UK are collaborating to advance artificial intelligence (AI) in Africa. The Ministry for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations is developing a National AI Strategy with UK support, expected to launch later this year. Meanwhile, Ghana has signed a $1 billion agreement with the UAE to establish Africa's first AI Innovation Hub in the Greater Accra Region.
The Ministry is promoting AI as a catalyst for opportunity and empowerment, focusing on its potential in healthcare, education, business, and mobile applications. It is working with academic institutions to develop Large Language Models (LLMs) in Ghanaian and African languages, including Twi, Ga, Ewe, Dagbani, Nzema, Kusasi, Yoruba, Hausa, Creole, and Swahili. This initiative aims to ensure AI solutions are locally relevant and culturally inclusive.
Google's Accra lab is contributing to global AI research by supporting the company's addressing system. Additionally, Moremi AI, backed by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, is developing AI for early cancer detection in Ghana. The government's digital transformation agenda seeks to create a digitally inclusive, data-driven society with responsible AI deployment across sectors.
The Ministry is also encouraging public relations and communications professionals to bridge the gap between technical AI developments and the public. This effort aims to foster understanding, ethical use, and socio-economic impact of AI. With these initiatives, Ghana is poised to become a leader in AI innovation in Africa.
