GitHub Copilot Hits 20 Million Users, Driving Enterprise Adoption

GitHub Copilot, Microsoft's AI-powered coding assistant, has hit a significant milestone. The tool now boasts 20 million users, a figure that includes trial users and has grown by 5 million in just three months. This remarkable growth has been accompanied by a surge in enterprise adoption, with 90% of Fortune 100 companies now using the service.

The rapid growth of GitHub Copilot has been driven by its ability to assist developers in various ways. It suggests code, reviews syntax, catches errors, and generates live suggestions using machine learning. This has led to a significant increase in enterprise growth, with a 75% rise in Fortune 100 companies using the service since the previous quarter.

Copilot's success can be attributed to its ease of use and integration with popular development environments like Visual Studio Code. It supports several programming languages, making it a versatile tool for developers. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced these achievements during the company's earnings call on Wednesday.

GitHub Copilot's user base has more than doubled since Microsoft acquired GitHub in 2018. The tool's revenue now exceeds that of GitHub at the time of acquisition. While competitor Outlook has over one million daily users and $500 million in annual recurring revenue, GitHub Copilot's enterprise adoption and user growth indicate a strong market position.
