Google and Google Cloud team up to further develop private identity technology
In a groundbreaking move, Google Cloud has partnered with Self, a leading zero-knowledge identity protocol, to integrate Self's privacy-preserving technology into Google Cloud's Web3 and AI tools. This partnership aims to transform the way digital identity and compliance function within the decentralized internet.
The collaboration will see Self's zero-knowledge proof (ZKP) technology being connected with emerging AI-powered search tools in Google Cloud's Web3 Portal. This integration will enable more secure and privacy-preserving identity verification for Web3 applications.
Google Cloud's Testnet Faucet will also incorporate Self's proof-of-humanity ZKPs to enhance Sybil resistance, preventing fake or duplicate identities from manipulating decentralized networks.
A pioneering Mainnet Faucet is being developed, which will use Self's exclusion proofs based on the OFAC (Office of Foreign Assets Control) sanctions list to perform real-time sanctions compliance screening on blockchain identity verifications. This is one of the first integrations of sanctions compliance into blockchain identity tools.
The partnership also aims to lower barriers to entry for developers by combining Self's privacy-first identity technology with Google Cloud’s Web3 developer toolset. This collaboration will facilitate AI adoption and innovation for verified human users in Web3 environments.
This partnership builds on earlier efforts, such as Self providing privacy-preserving age verification for Google Wallets in the UK and supporting EU-wide age assurance compliance initiatives.
Self supports both off-chain and on-chain attestations, with the on-chain attestations operating on the Celo blockchain, where Google Cloud runs a validator node and has been a longtime partner since 2018.
Richard Widmann, Head of Strategy for Web3 at Google Cloud, highlighted the role of AI in accelerating Web3 developer engagement and the importance of integrating ZKP-enabled identity tech. Self’s co-founder Marek Olszewski emphasized that Google’s choice to adopt Self’s SDK validates its advanced, privacy-first identity solutions.
Self's technology is involved in privacy-first age assurance compliance efforts across the European Union. The Self protocol facilitates both off-chain and on-chain attestations and accommodates biometric passport holders across 129 nations, supporting over 8 million users.
This collaboration marks a significant step toward making private, verifiable digital identity a standard feature of Web3 ecosystems and reflects a broader industry movement toward secure, decentralized identity systems that can scale globally. The partnership between Self and Google Cloud is poised to drive the adoption of privacy-preserving AI infrastructure and Web3 tools among verified human users.
