Google Drive's 'Suggested files' feature receives a makeover with M3 Expressive design update
The latest version (2.25.306.6) of Google Drive for Android brings a significant update to the "Suggested files" widget, introducing the Material 3 (M3) Expressive redesign. This redesign aims to provide a more cohesive and modernized user interface.
A Single, Rounded Container Design
The update replaces the old two-part design with a single rounded rectangle container. The top-left corner now features "Drive" and the app logo, while pill-shaped buttons for quick file uploads and search (if the widget is wide enough) are integrated into the design.
Improved File Display
The list of suggested Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc., is now shown below in individual containers. This change consolidates the display, making it easier for users to navigate and find the files they need.
Support for Various Widget Sizes
The redesigned widget continues to support widget sizes from 3×2 to full homescreen width, ensuring flexibility for users to customize their home screen layouts.
Other Notable Changes
- The file upload and video player on Google Drive for Android are also being redesigned, aiming to provide a more seamless user experience.
- The smallest configuration for the widget remains at 3×2, while it can take up the entire homescreen for a comprehensive view of suggested files.
- The account picker may take a moment to appear after placing the widget on the homescreen.
This update follows previous Material 3 Expressive updates on the Drive quick actions widget and reflects Google's broader push for a more unified and modernized widget UI. Additionally, Gemini in Google Drive can now analyze videos, and Gemini is adding a 'Catch me up' command. The Google Drive quick actions widget also received the M3 Expressive design alongside Google Keep in April.
Technology integration is evident in the new design of the "Suggested files" widget on Google Drive for Android, as it adopts the Material 3 (M3) Expressive redesign. The widget now sports a single, rounded rectangle container for a more cohesive and modernized user interface, with an improved file display in individual containers that consolidates the navigation process.
