Google Messages Introduces Pill-Shaped Buttons in Beta Update

In a recent update, Google Messages v20250701 beta, has introduced a fresh new look to its interface. The messaging app is now adopting the bold and colorful vibes of Material 3 Expressive, as part of a broader design update that Google has been gradually rolling out.

One of the most notable changes is the introduction of pill-shaped buttons on the Contact profile page, as well as for the main action buttons like Call, Video, Contact Info, and Search. These buttons replace the previously more rectangular or icon-only buttons, giving the interface a softer, more modern look that is consistent with Material 3's emphasis on expressive shapes and accessible touch targets.

The new pill-shaped buttons not only look sleek but also react when tapped, expanding in width and snapping back once released. This added touch of flair and polish enhances the user experience, making interactions with the app more engaging.

The change isn't limited to the chat screen. The tabs for emoji, Photomoji, GIFs, and stickers are also being changed to a pill-shaped layout. Even the "plus" icon menu in Google Messages now has bigger, rounder buttons with more space.

The new design is a testament to Google's heavy investment in the Material 3 Expressive design. With this update, it seems that the Material 3 Expressive design is moving closer to being released to the stable version, bringing a fresh and modern look to Google's suite of apps.

Tapping a tab in the new layout makes it pop with a richer color that matches the Material 3 theme, adding a touch of consistency and cohesion to the overall design. The new buttons are also larger, making them easier to tap and reducing the chances of accidental taps.

This update is a significant step forward for Google Messages, making it more user-friendly and visually appealing. As the update continues to roll out, users can look forward to a more seamless and enjoyable messaging experience.
