Google Calendar for Android is set to receive a Material 3 Expressive redesign, bringing a modernized, colourful, and clearer interface to the app. The update focuses on visual enhancements rather than a complete overhaul of the user experience.

Dynamic Color Refresh

The redesign applies colours from your phone's wallpaper dynamically to various elements, creating a personalized look. This dynamic colouring, mainly applied to backgrounds and containers, is a key feature of the Material You design principles [1][2].

Month and Week View Redesign

In the Month view, days are now encapsulated in rounded rectangles instead of straightforward grid lines, giving a card-like, tactile feel. This replaces the previous sharp-edged separation and subtly improves differentiation between days. The Week view receives a similar treatment [1][2].

Improved Readability

Time slots in both the Month and Week views have bolder containers with a primary shade of the Dynamic Color, replacing the faint, thin gridlines. This change enhances visual clarity and contrast for better readability [1][2].

Subtle UI Adjustments

Days of the week are now abbreviated when necessary to save space, and the Schedule (Agenda) view retains its look but adopts the Dynamic Color background hue. Other views, such as events, creation interface, and settings, have not been updated in this redesign [1].

No Major UX Changes

The Material 3 Expressive redesign focuses on a visual update rather than a complete user experience overhaul. Existing navigation and fundamental app interactions remain mostly unchanged [2][5].

The redesign places time slots in containers with a solid background layer in the primary shade of Dynamic Color, which might help with visibility due to the use of solid background layers instead of faint lines. However, the redesign does not appear to have been extended to the Agenda view yet [1].

The Google Calendar Material 3 Expressive redesign is being implemented with a server-side update to version 2025.30.x. The redesign is not yet widely rolled out, but it's exciting to see how this update will enhance the user experience for Google Calendar users on Android.

In addition, Material 3 Expressive is already making its way to Wear OS Tiles, suggesting that Google is committed to bringing this design language to various platforms [3]. Google Calendar has also released a simple Apple Watch app, offering a consistent experience across devices [4].

Despite the modern look, some users have found the design to feel heavier to browse, particularly in the Month view. However, the enhanced visual structure and clearer interface could outweigh this perceived heaviness for many users [6].
