HBO has cast Aaron Pierre as John Stewart in its upcoming series, Lanterns (Updated)

Ditching the rumor mill, HBO's official announcement declares 'Rebel Ridge' star, Aaron Pierre, as the coveted John Stewart in the upcoming series, 'Lanterns'.

The announcement skips over the recent speculations centering Kyle Chandler, who was rumored to be in talks for the role of Hal Jordan. However, with HBO's communiqué, Chandler's casting has now become an official fact.

Reminding us of the series' gripping narrative, the official logline paints a vivid picture of intergalactic law enforcement and earth-bound mysteries. The story revolves around John Stewart, a new recruit, and Hal Jordan, a Lantern legend, who become embroiled in a dark American mystery while investigating a murder in the heartland.

Previously, reports suggested the production aimed to create a gritty 'True Detective'-esque atmosphere as it focuses on Jordan guiding a younger Lantern, John Stewart, who in DC comics history, was one of the first Black superheroes.

With his star on the rise, Pierre is set to shine brighter than ever, assuming the lead role as Mufasa in Barry Jenkins' highly-anticipated 'Lion King' prequel, due out this December from Disney.

The press release also heralds some key productions details, including the series being co-written by Chris Mundy and Damon Lindelof, along with renowned comic writer Tom King. Directing duties for the first two episodes will be handled by James Hawes, and, of course, the series is based on the highly popular DC comic 'Green Lantern'.

Joining the ranks, DC architect, James Gunn extends a warm welcome to his latest star, Aaron Pierre.
