Hessian Police Call for Drone Defense System Amid Growing Threat
The Hessian police union has called for its own drone defense system, highlighting the growing threat posed by drones in Germany. This year alone, there have been 144 disruptions caused by drones nationwide. The police, however, lack appropriate materials to counter this threat.
The German Police Union (DPolG) in Hesse has emphasized the need for unified systems and laws to effectively deal with drone disruptions. Meanwhile, Bavaria is planning to set up its own drone center to develop capture and hunting drones. Experts warn that drones pose a serious threat, particularly in hybrid warfare scenarios.
The police must be equipped to detect and neutralize drones, especially at large events and busy places. In response, the German government is planning to enhance the Bundeswehr's capabilities by introducing 'Loitering Munition' drones that can engage hostile drones. The first live-fire exercises are scheduled for this year. Additionally, Minister Alexander Dobrindt aims to establish a drone competence center and collaborate with Israel on a joint research project to improve drone defense capabilities.
However, shooting down drones should be considered a last resort, according to expert Verena Jackson, due to significant risks. Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) has proposed expanding the powers of the Bundeswehr to combat illegal drone flights. The federal special fund could be used to provide the necessary means for drone defense.
The increasing use of drones in Germany has led to a call for enhanced drone defense capabilities among law enforcement agencies. With the government planning to bolster the Bundeswehr's drone combat capabilities and the police union pushing for unified systems, the future of drone defense in Germany is a topic of ongoing discussion.
