High-end speakers from Wharfedale, Evo 5 series, offering divine audio quality at surprisingly affordable costs.
Wharfedale Slaps a Fresh Coat on Its Evo Speaker Line
The Evo 5 speaker range has burst onto the scene, hot on the heels of the beloved Evo 4 series, premiering at High End Munich 2025. Loaded with updated bits, upgraded drivers, and hush-hush damping technology, this new breed promises to bring the heat while still offering premium tech and sound at fair prices.
Our award-winning, five-star mate, the Evo 4.4 floorstander, certainly left its mark, so we can't wait to see what the Evo 5 range holds in store. This fresh range separates into a multitude of options, catering to diverse preferences, complete with an Evo 5.1 standmount speaker, the room-filling Evo 5.2 large standmounters, no less than two floorstanders (the Evo 5.3 and Evo 5.4), and the dead-on-arrival Evo 5.C center channel for those building a home cinema system.
Mid-tier audiophiles have always been a special set for the Evo crew, with premium technology pasted into these more affordable ranges, such as the murmuring AMT (Air Motion Transformer) tweeter and a lovely, round domed midrange driver. Keep your eyes peeled, listeners, ’cause the AMT driver's seen a massive increase in down hoped-for surface area, rising from the outgoing Evo 4's skimpy 35x60mm unit to a roomier 35x70mm in the Evo 5. Meanwhile, our midrange driver's been chiseled and refined to play nice with the Evo 5's superior AMT tweeter.
To help with overall sound, the AMT driver now sports a fancy new sound-absorbing material called SilentWeave, a cotton/felt concoction devised specifically for these new speakers, reducing those pesky sound wave reflections whirling about inside the cabinet. Now that's some engineering finesse, people!
Moving on, the Evo 5 drivers embrace a cog-like beast called ResoFrame, thrown in from the elastomer manufactories. Sitting in the drivetrain lineup, this frame iggy-wiggles our mechanic resonances, leaving our high frequencies feeling smooooooth as butter. The AMT tweeters experience supplementary damping courtesy of a gasket dancing between the diaphragm and the front plate, further minimizing mechanical resonances and honing in on lower treble perfection.
The domed midrange driver teams up with the SilentWeave hybrid material and the acoustic damping frame, promising a perfectly sweetened treble with a wide dispersion, increased efficiency, and superior clarity. Low-frequency drivers throughout the Evo 5 series also receive some love, playing host to a new low-mass elastomer damping ring, positioned behind the driver cone where it meets the surround. The aim here is to optimize the lower midrange, so expect a more natural, emotional, and lush performance right from the get-go!
The brainiacs over at Wharfedale didn't stop there—no siree, they spruced up the crossovers by running relay races between the components and drive units. In the three-way folks, the crossover jumbles were split into two: one drilled for treble and midrange affairs, and the other dedicated solely to bass generated fun. This design helps beat down electromagnetic interference, ensuring transparency and crystal clarity.
Wharfedale smartened up its bass port technology peeps, switching the Evo 5.C's scoring system from two-dimensional ports firing willy-nilly to a fancier SLPP (Slot Loaded Profiled Port) set up that shoots in three directions: left, right, and wisps behind 'em. This enhanced party brings deeper bass, better extension, and improved room alignment. Rounding out the design overhaul, the Evo 5 cabinets receive a gentle boost in size to accommodate all these upgrades, while maintaining the perfect proportion.
Finally, the overall Evo 5 series cooks up an elegant symphony in four different flavors: walnut wood veneer, lustrous black, pristine white, and a brand spankin' new, muted grey. Feast your eyes on these goodies come June, and prepare to why-not drop some coin:
