Historic Cottbus Railway Locomotive Undergoes Restoration
The 99 001 locomotive, a cherished technical monument on Cottbus' miniature railway, is set for restoration. Funding for this project comes from the state monument protection and the Deutsche Bahn (DB), as part of an infrastructure project aimed at enhancing the maintenance capacity of vehicles in the region [1].
Built in 1918, the 99 001 locomotive has been a staple of the miniature railway since its debut as the first locomotive of the then Pioneers' Railway in Cottbus in 1954. Over the years, it has undergone brief interruptions in service, but continued to operate [2].
In recent years, the locomotive has faced issues with the wheel and link bearings, the coupling, and the driving rods [3]. To address these problems, the restoration process will involve a thorough inspection and overhaul of all components, including the running gear, boiler, and other critical parts [4].
The restoration works for the 99 001 locomotive will be carried out in Zamberk, Czech Republic. The total costs for the restoration are estimated to be approximately 450,000 euros, with the German state contributing over 140,000 euros towards the repair [5].
The miniature railway in Cottbus operates on a 3.2-kilometer circular track with a gauge of 600 millimeters, and both steam and diesel locomotives are in operation on this track [6]. The restoration of the 99 001 locomotive will not only preserve a piece of railway history but also contribute to the continued operation of the miniature railway as a technical monument.
