Hong Kong Boosts Surveillance with 60,000 AI-Powered CCTV Cameras by 2028

Hong Kong is bolstering its surveillance capabilities with a significant expansion of CCTV cameras equipped with AI-powered facial recognition. By 2028, the city aims to install tens of thousands of these cameras, up from the current 4,000. The initiative, known as SmartView, is expected to enhance national security and crime prevention.

The use of AI in surveillance has shown promising results. Since the launch of the initiative last year, over 400 cases have been solved, and 787 arrests made, thanks to CCTV footage. The technology is not limited to facial recognition; it also aids in crowd monitoring and licence plate reading. Real-time facial recognition is set to debut in police operations by the end of 2023.

The expansion is part of the SmartView programme, which police say is crucial for safeguarding national security and detecting crimes. However, the evaluation of AI for person recognition in Hong Kong's surveillance cameras remains unclear. Typically, such tasks involve government agencies or tech companies specializing in AI and surveillance systems.

By 2028, Hong Kong's CCTV network will grow to 60,000 cameras, a significant increase from the current 4,000. The integration of AI-powered facial recognition is expected to strengthen security and crime prevention. The programme's success will depend on the effective evaluation and deployment of these advanced surveillance technologies.
