Hydrogen Train Fleet Not Fully Operational Until Next Year - Hydrogen Trains Boost RB15 Line Reliability, Full Modernization by End of 2023
A mix of hydrogen and diesel trains is currently serving passengers on the RB15 line, with more than half of the 27 hydrogen trains already operational. The fleet's full modernization, including new fuel cells, is expected to be completed by the end of next year, improving reliability to around 96%.
The RB15 line, connecting Bad Homburg and Brandoberndorf, has faced significant issues due to train failures. However, the situation has improved with the introduction of hydrogen trains. Alstom, the company responsible for the modernization program, aims to have the entire fleet fully operational by the end of next year.
In the Taunus region, only hydrogen-powered trains operate on the RB12 line between Frankfurt and Königstein. The start of the world's largest fleet of hydrogen trains in the Taunus network was initially planned for December 2022 but encountered problems from the outset.
With the modernization program on track, the fully operational hydrogen train fleet is expected to enhance reliability and reduce emissions on the RB15 line. The specific city where this modernized fleet will become fully operational next year is not explicitly mentioned, but the Duisburger Verkehrsgesellschaft AG in Duisburg is involved in similar projects.
