In the heart of North Rhine-Westphalia, the historic city of Düsseldorf is taking a significant step towards preserving its unique cultural heritage. The city's iconic gas lighting system, a relic of the industrial revolution, is on a mission to secure a place on the UNESCO tentative list.

The initiative to secure the long-term existence of the gas lanterns, numbering around 10,000, was spearheaded by Cornelia Zuschke. Her dialogue procedure has ensured the continuity of this historic lighting system, a feature that is unique to Düsseldorf alone.

The application to the ministry was jointly prepared by The Düsseldorf Jonges and Initiative Düsseldorf Gaslight. The Institute for Heritage Conservation and Heritage Management of the city, under the leadership of Svenja Schrickel, provided significant support for the application. Carolyn Eickelkamp personally submitted the application to the ministry.

The expert panel, responsible for reviewing and evaluating applications from North Rhine-Westphalia, will conduct their assessment in the spring. The KMK will compile the so-called tentative list, which will then be sent to UNESCO.

The Düsseldorf gas lighting, a significant part of the city's cultural heritage, shaped the age of industrialization in all cities worldwide. Its preservation is not just a testament to Düsseldorf's rich history, but also to the global impact of this unique industrial and cultural heritage monument.

As the third quarter of 2021 approaches, a decision will be made on which applications the state will forward to the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK). The outcome of this decision will bring Düsseldorf one step closer to securing its place on the UNESCO tentative list, ensuring the long-term preservation of this unique and valuable part of the city's heritage.

While the current status of the Düsseldorf Gas Light's application remains unclear, the city and its supporters remain optimistic about its chances. The preservation of this historic lighting system is not just a local concern, but a global one, as it represents a piece of history that has shaped the world we live in today.
