In a significant development, SpaceX, the renowned U.S. space company, is on the verge of conducting the ninth test flight of its Starship mega-rocket. Scheduled for Tuesday at 18:30 local time (01:30 CET) from the Starbase spaceport in Texas, the spacecraft has a lofty objective: enabling Mars travel as early as 2026.

Standing at 123 meters tall, the Starship is the largest and most powerful spacecraft ever constructed. Its primary goal is to establish a reusable and cost-effective space vehicle. Despite eight test flights so far, four of them have met with explosions in the orbit stages. In the most recent test in March, the upper stage exploded, with debris scattering over the Bahamas, as shown in online imagery. Similarly, during the seventh test flight in mid-January, an explosion occurred in the upper stage, causing debris to strike the Turks and Caicos Islands in the Caribbean.

In response to these issues, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has extended the airspace exclusion zone for this ninth test flight. Instead of the usual 800-mile radius shutdown, airspace within a 1600-mile radius will be closed to aviation traffic.

The upcoming test mission involves notable changes from previous flights. For the first time, the lowest rocket stage will be reused, and Starship will launch satellite dummies into the atmosphere. Additionally, SpaceX has transferred resources to the Starship program, reportedly preparing for a Mars mission as early as next year.
