Improved Repairability Possible for Pixel Watch 4, but Specifics Remain Elusive

In a bid to address long-standing criticism of its previous Pixel Watch models being essentially unrepairable, Google has made significant design changes to the upcoming Pixel Watch 4. These changes aim to enhance repairability, making the device more sustainable and offering better long-term value.

The new Pixel Watch 4 features a more modular internal structure, with separate logic boards held by screws, contrasting with the earlier sealed "puck-like" design that made disassembly extremely difficult. This design change will allow for easier servicing, potentially even by community repair networks such as iFixit.

One of the most notable updates is the accessible battery compartment, which will facilitate easier battery replacements by professional technicians. Additionally, the design modifications enable screen replacement without needing to replace the entire unit, a major shift from prior models where cracked screens meant full-unit replacement.

These changes mark a pivotal step towards sustainability and long-term value as damaged devices can now be serviced rather than discarded. The Pixel Watch 4’s emphasis on repairability aligns with Google's public commitment to sustainability and reducing e-waste, moving away from its past approach of offering replacements instead of repairs.

Furthermore, while earlier Pixel Watches had a glass dome made of standard Gorilla Glass prone to cracking, it remains under speculation whether the Pixel Watch 4 uses more durable glass similar to competitors. However, the repair-friendly internals themselves are the key update allowing fixes for cracked screens and depleted batteries.

Google has confirmed an August 20 event to launch its new Pixel lineup, including the Pixel Watch 4. The Pixel Watch 4 is reportedly going to be repairable, unlike its previous generations, and may offer new case colours and band options. However, details about the repairs for the Pixel Watch 4 are currently vague, with Google yet to provide specific information on the matter.

The Pixel Watch 4's new modular design, comprising separate logic boards held by screws, transforms it into a smart-home-device that can potentially be serviced by community repair networks such as iFixit, using gadgets like screwdrivers and other repair tools. This enhanced repairability, a result of the design changes, aligns with Google's public commitment to sustainability and reducing e-waste, as damaged devices can now be serviced rather than discarded, making technology more sustainable in the long run.
