Pattaya Advances in Regional Safety Ranking, Crediting Improved Measures

In a significant leap, the coastal city of Pattaya has climbed into the top 10 of the Southeast Asia Safety Index by Numbeo. City Mayor Poramet Ngampichet attributes this progress to the city's sustained efforts to enhance safety and security measures.

Based on surveys answered by website visitors, Pattaya ranked ninth, surpassing cities like Phuket and Jakarta. Chiang Mai claimed the title of the safest city in the region, while Bangkok secured seventh place.

Numbeo, a crowd-sourced online database, provides data on consumer prices, property prices, and various quality-of-life indicators, including the cost of living in Pattaya, which can be found here.

The improved ranking reflects the city's advancements in safety, particularly at tourist sites, according to Mayor Ngampichet. He points to a decrease in crime rates and strengthened police capabilities in crime suppression as key factors.

The enhanced reputation for safety aligns well with City Hall's policies, Mayor Ngampichet adds. However, he acknowledges that the city's safety record has been a subject of public suspicion, given the frequent criminal news reports. He assures that this perception does not accurately represent the evolving safety scenario in Pattaya.

In an effort to further boost security, City Hall has installed over 2,000 closed-circuit TV cameras throughout the city. These cameras will aid in future criminal investigations. The city is also planning a study trip to the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) in Bangkok to learn how best to utilize CCTV for investigation purposes.

Furthermore, authorities aim to increase lighting across the city and encourage public participation in safety inspections. With a floating population estimated to be three to four times higher than the registered locals, community involvement is crucial in crime prevention efforts.

Last year, Pattaya welcomed 20 million Thai and foreign visitors. According to Mayor Ngampichet, Pattaya City Hall is committed to lessening the accident and crime rate in the city, striving to create a safer and more attractive destination for tourists and residents alike.

Technology's role in crime prevention is evidenced by the installment of over 2,000 closed-circuit TV cameras in Pattaya, with the aim to facilitate future criminal investigations and bolster safety. This technical upgrade, along with increased lighting and community participation, is part of Pattaya City Hall's plans to improve general-news coverage related to crime-and-justice in the region.
