Increase in BYD Dolphin Surf Pricing – Temporary Adjustment Only
The electric city car, the BYD Dolphin Surf, is making a bold entrance into the German market as part of BYD's "conquest of the German market" operation. Priced at an introductory rate of 19,990 euros, the Dolphin Surf offers a range of features designed to appeal to environmentally-conscious consumers.
The Dolphin Surf comes equipped with three driving modes: Eco, Normal, and Sport, providing drivers with the flexibility to suit their driving style. During a test drive, the consumption of the vehicle stabilised at a good 12.6 kWh/100 km, indicating efficient performance.
The AC charging power of the Dolphin Surf is 11 kW, while the maximum DC fast charging power is a robust 85 kW. A DC fast charging station can charge the energy storage from 10% to 80% in just 30 minutes.
The interior of the Dolphin Surf boasts upholstered surfaces and ample space for four adults, thanks to a wheelbase of 2.50 meters. The on-board computer showed a remaining range of 280 kilometers after a relaxed drive through Berlin with a 90% charge.
The base version of the Dolphin Surf comes with a 30 kWh battery, while the Comfort variant is equipped with a larger 43.2 kWh battery and a 115 kW (156 PS) motor, offering up to 310 kilometers of range according to the WLTP cycle.
The Comfort version of the Dolphin Surf also features LED headlights, while the Active and Boost versions use traditional halogen lights. The vehicle is fitted with a rotating monitor, a touchscreen of 10.1 inches, a driver's display behind the wheel, voice control, and the ability to connect smartphones with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
The BYD Dolphin Surf also offers a V2L function (Vehicle to Load) that allows household appliances to be connected. The trunk offers a capacity of 388 liters, expandable to 1,037 liters with the rear seats folded down.
BYD plans to open a European development center in Hungary and move the production of the Dolphin Surf from China to Hungary for potential improvements. Maria Grazia Davino, the German BYD manager, emphasises the company's focus on self-improvement and maintaining its values.
The Dolphin Surf will compete with city electric vehicles like the Citroën ë-C3, a Hyundai Ioniq, and the Renault 5 in the German market. Last year, the current world leader in electric mobility sold around 5,000 vehicles in Germany.
However, it's worth noting that the introductory price for the BYD Dolphin Surf is valid until July 1, after which the price will increase to at least 22,990 euros. The rear visibility of the Dolphin Surf is limited due to a steeply rising shoulder line.
Despite these minor drawbacks, the BYD Dolphin Surf presents an attractive option for those seeking an efficient, feature-rich, and affordable electric city car.
