Increase in Organ Donation Called for by Minister Warken
Get On Board: Save Lives by Registering as an Organ Donor!
Hear this, folks! Federal Health Minister, Nina Warken, has put out a call to action for potential organ donors. Organ donation saves lives, as there are countless individuals desperately waiting for an organ transplant. In light of Organ Donation Day, Warken urges everyone willing to take this life-saving step to talk about it with their loved ones and document their decision - be it via an organ donor card or the organ donor register.
A year strong, the online organ donor register now boasts around 319,200 people who have expressed their willingness to donate. Among these, 82.9% agreed to organ removal after death without restriction, while 8.1% recorded objections.
You can document your intentions from the age of16 at the online portal www.organspende-register.de. The information is voluntary and can be adjusted or withdrawn at any time. Organ donor cards and other paper-based statements are still an option too. The register is the nucleus of a 2020 law that aims to streamline information and facilitate easier documentation of decisions. It should also be possible to register at offices.
Despite the efforts, there are still around 8,300 people on waiting lists for donor organs, such as kidneys, livers, or hearts. Last year saw 953 people giving organs posthumously, compared to 965 in 2023.
Eugen Brysch, a board member of the German Foundation forPatient Protection, laments that the online donor registration process is overly complex. Therefore, the Bundestag decided, in 2020, that passport and ID offices should also be interconnected with the register.
Behind the Scenes
To boost organ donor participation in Germany, several strategies have been identified and trialed, drawing on recent initiatives and expert insights. The challenges include low registration despite high public support, complex and fragmented systems, and barriers to digital registration. Proposed solutions include integrating registration into everyday activities, streamlining digital access, promoting education and trust, and refining the legislative and process workflows. Constructive changes in these areas can help bridge the gap between enthusiastic public sentiment and low registration rates, thereby saving more lives. 💙🧤🌟
