Instagram Introduces Real-Time Location Sharing Feature; Learn How to Disable It

Instagram, the popular social media platform, has introduced a feature that allows users to share their location with friends in real time, similar to Snap Maps. However, the platform offers strong privacy controls for this feature, ensuring users can manage their location sharing preferences effectively.

To access the location sharing settings on Instagram, navigate to the Map icon at the top of your inbox in the Messages tab. Once there, tap the circular settings icon at the top right of the map. You will see a prompt labeled “Who can see your location.” Here, you can select who can see your location, with options including:

  • Friends (followers you follow back)
  • Close Friends (only people you've added to your Close Friends list)
  • Only These Friends (choose specific users you want to share your location with)
  • No One (to disable location sharing altogether)

If you wish to disable location sharing for specific users, choose "Only These Friends" and then exclude those specific users, or select "No One" if you want to stop sharing completely. Tap "Done" to confirm your choice.

It's important to note that Instagram location sharing is off by default and only active if you manually opt in. Only the people you choose can see your location. If you want to stop location sharing in stories or live videos, you can go to your story settings and choose to hide your location from specific people or set Location Sharing to “No One.”

Additionally, if you wish to turn off precise location sharing from your phone entirely, you can do so in your mobile device’s settings by disabling location access for Instagram.

Instagram's location sharing feature offers users a high degree of control over their privacy, allowing them to choose who can see their location and when. This feature is currently available for US users, but may soon launch in India as well.

Remember, turning off location sharing on Instagram does not affect a user's ability to view others' shared locations. Instagram uses different icons to indicate location-sharing status: a blue arrow means sharing, a red dot means not sharing, and an orange triangle means location permissions are turned off on the device.
