In the ongoing quest to combat climate change, innovative solutions are being developed to optimise materials production in the cement industry. Current AI-based approaches primarily focus on reducing carbon emissions by redesigning cement formulations, improving process efficiency, and enabling clinker substitution with supplementary materials while maintaining product quality.

However, a groundbreaking product, Carbon Re's Delta-Zero Cement, is set to redefine the industry by targeting net-zero carbon emissions in cement production. Unlike existing AI-optimised formulations or process efficiency improvements that still rely on clinker to some extent and combustion processes emitting CO2, Delta-Zero Cement aims to eliminate the carbon footprint entirely.

Key AI innovations in the cement industry include AI-driven recipe optimization, process control, and material discovery. For instance, researchers at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Switzerland have developed a machine learning model that simulates thousands of cement formulations in seconds, suggesting climate-friendlier recipes by reducing clinker content. Similarly, AI models are employed to analyse real-time process data in cement plants to stabilise clinker quality and optimise kiln operations, thereby reducing fuel consumption, lowering emissions, and increasing throughput without expensive equipment upgrades.

MIT researchers have also created an AI tool that scans extensive scientific data and geological samples to identify alternative supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) that can partially replace cement, supporting the reuse of industrial and construction waste and reducing environmental impact and costs.

Carbon Re, a London-based climate tech company, is developing Delta-Zero Cement, a product that could reduce fuel emissions in cement production by up to 20 percent per plant. Cement, one of the most used materials in construction worldwide, contributes significantly to carbon emissions, responsible for about 8 percent of global carbon emissions.

Delta-Zero Cement is designed to enable cement operators to use the least amount of fuel to produce the quantity of product they need at the quality level they require. The fuel combustion process in cement production accounts for half the emissions associated with cement production. Carbon Re's solution differs from existing solutions by using AI and machine learning to optimise fuel combustion processes in cement production.

Sherif Elsayed-Ali, the co-founder and CEO of Carbon Re, explains that existing solutions for reducing emissions in cement production rely on expert systems with hard-coded rules. In contrast, Delta-Zero Cement simulates chemical and physical processes in a given manufacturing plant, analyses live data, and provides specific control adjustments to lower emissions and fuel costs.

Elsayed-Ali notes that the interactions between variables in cement production are complex, making it a challenging problem to solve. However, he compares Carbon Re's solution to Google Maps, suggesting it provides dynamic and efficient optimization of processes.

Carbon Re's main focus is on decarbonizing the production of materials, starting with cement. As the company continues to develop machine learning models and AI systems to reduce emissions in material production, the future of the cement industry could well be on the path to net-zero emissions, thanks to innovations like Delta-Zero Cement.
