Green Skies Ahead: TU Freiberg and CAC Engineering Pioneer Climate-Friendly Jet Fuel

Investigating Climate-Friendly Aviation Fuel: TU Freiberg's Work on Carbon-Neutral Kerosene - Investigations on Carbon-Neutral Aviation Fuel

No more carbon guilt when we jetset! That's the promise from TU Bergakademie Freiberg in Saxony, Germany, and Chemnitz-based CAC Engineering. With a flair for innovation, these trailblazers have inaugurated the nation's largest facility for manufacturing climate-neutral jet fuel derived from methanol, as announced in a joint statement. This marks a new milestone in the greening of our skies!

Revolutionary Collaboration

In this ambitious venture, TU Freiberg has teamed up with CAC Engineering and other partners to develop a cutting-edge technology for producing jet fuel that won't leave a carbon footprint. The project has already produced its first eco-friendly liters of aviation fuel, ushering in a new era of sustainable flying.

Government Support

Funded by the Federal Government, this research project aims to refine and enhance the technology, with the ambitious plan to build Germany's very first commercial-scale industrial plant for sustainable synthetic jet fuel based on methanol within 4 to 6 years, targeting 2029–2031.

Eco-friendly Energy: The Fuel of the Future

For years, the TU Bergakademie has been exploring alternative fuels, focusing on e-fuels—synthetically produced liquid fuels and energy carriers using renewable electricity. Their secret ingredient, methanol, is regeneratively produced from CO2 and hydrogen. Unlike traditional methods, this method can be executed at energy-efficient locations, transported easily as a liquid energy carrier, and processed at facilities with adequate infrastructure [1].

A Vision for 2030

Can fossil jet fuel kiss the runway goodbye? As environmental concerns grow ever more pressing, sustainable synthetic aviation fuels (SAF) are geared to phase out traditional fossil fuels entirely. Since long-distance flights require high energy densities, a liquid jet fuel remains indispensable. Aiming for an Eco-friendly sky, the Freibergers plan to submit their first jet fuel samples for certification in 2026 and commission a commercial production plant with an annual capacity of 10,000 tons by 2030 [2].

So buckle up and breathe easy, as the future of air travel is looking luxuriously green!

  1. The research project, EwOPro, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK), is being coordinated by Project Management Jülich (PTJ), with a focus on converting renewable methanol into jet fuel.
  2. The research policy and community policy surrounding environmental science, especially in the sectors of finance, technology, and industry, are playing significant roles in advancing the development and implementation of research programmes for sustainable synthetic aviation fuels (SAF).
  3. To support research and development in the domain of climate-friendly jet fuel, the Federal Government has funded a project aimed at refining and enhancing the technology, with a goal to build Germany's first commercial-scale industrial plant for sustainable synthetic jet fuel based on methanol within 4 to 6 years, targeting 2029–2031.
  4. In addition to the promise of climate-neutral jet fuel, the environmental-science industry offers a myriad of research projects, initiatives, and programmes dedicated to exploring alternatives to fossil fuels and fostering a greener, more sustainable future for energy-intensive industries like air travel.
