"Jensen Huang perceives the UK as possessing substantial potential in the AI domain, yet it requires significant effort to establish itself as a globally dominant AI ecosystem without its own infrastructure."
Unleashing AI's Potential: The UK's Big Push, as Advised by Nvidia's Jensen Huang
Nvidia CEO, Jensen Huang, has emphasized the UK's significant potential in AI, but highlighted the need for substantial infrastructure expansion to fully capitalize on it. During a chat with UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, at London Tech Week, Huang underlined that building AI supercomputers in the UK would be instrumental in attracting investments.
The UK, Huang pointed out, boasts one of the richest AI communities globally and third-highest AI venture capital investment, making it an alluring destination for AI spending. However, Huang also raised concerns about the UK being the "largest AI ecosystem in the world without its own infrastructure," comparing the predicament to astronomers without radio telescopes unable to perform their work.
Huang argued that laying a strong foundation for infrastructure, with Nvidia's participation, will foster research that will in turn fuel business growth, driving further infrastructure advancements. The UK government's commitment to boosting the UK's compute capacity 20x by 2030, as declared in its AI Opportunities Action plan, will aid this growth. The government has pledged an additional £1 billion ($1.35 billion) in funding to support this enhancement, promising rapid expansion of data centers and labs.
Nvidia's hardware is already a significant part of AI data centers and supercomputer infrastructure across the globe, including the Bristol-based Isambard-AI supercomputer. At the event, AI cloud platform provider Nscale announced plans to build UK AI infrastructure using 10,000 Nvidia Blackwell GPUs, while AI infrastructure firm Nebius committed to building a UK AI factory with 4,000 Nvidia Blackwell GPUs.
Starmer reiterated the government's dedication to maintaining dialogue with the private sector to strengthen the UK's AI expertise, expressing enthusiasm about the transformative impact AI could have on people's lives. The government had a pre-event meeting with cabinet ministers and tech industry figures, including Huang, Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, and former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, to discuss attracting AI investments and expanding AI skills.
The UK government has outlined plans to train 7.5 million people in AI partnership with companies like Nvidia, Google, and Microsoft by 2030.Recent examples of AI initiatives include the government using AI tools like Gemini to digitize planning documents for streamlined construction projects, showcasing their ongoing commitment to AI growth.
