Kimber Unveils R7 Mako: 19-Ounce, Optic-Ready 9mm Powerhouse
Kimber has unveiled the R7 Mako, a 19-ounce, 1-inch-thick polymer 9mm handgun designed for easy concealment and exceptional performance. The new model stands out with its aggressive grip, optic-ready slide, and outstanding accuracy.
The R7 Mako features an aggressive 360-degree grip stippling with a slight palm swell and an ultra-thin beavertail, ensuring easy control. Kimber has solved a common sighting dilemma by cutting out the slide for a mini-reflex optic and installing factory TruGlo tritium tall sights, which can be used even if the optic's batteries fail.
The Mako's ejection port is open only on the right, helping to keep gases and brass away from the gun's optic and mitigating dust and debris from entering the action when carried. The gun holds 14 rounds and comes with an undercut trigger guard for improved grip. Its trigger is one of the best factory-offered, striker-fired triggers, averaging 4.5 pounds with very little creep.
The R7 Mako's accuracy is outstanding, with average groups of 0.90 inches at 10 yards using premium ammo. It is offered in two versions: optic-ready with a cover plate or optic-installed with Crimson Trace's CTS-1500 bolted on top. The Mako's ejector is beefier and higher profile than Glock's pattern, and it uses machined steel rails instead of aluminum-reinforced polymer guides for the slide. It also comes with an ambidextrous slide release and an oversized, ambidextrous magazine-release button that sits in a crater to prevent accidental depression.
The Kimber R7 Mako is a versatile, accurate, and well-designed carry gun that offers excellent features for its price. With its optic-ready slide, outstanding trigger, and exceptional accuracy, the R7 Mako is a strong contender in the compact polymer 9mm market. Kimber plans to release a micro-compact version of this model in the future.
