KRA Simplifies Tax Services for Small Businesses with USSD, WhatsApp and Agents
The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) is streamlining its tax services to make them more accessible and convenient for small and microenterprises. The authority is addressing taxpayer feedback and implementing new measures to simplify processes and reduce costs.
KRA operates 136 service points, serving 22 million registered taxpayers. To expand reach, the authority plans to recruit 10,000 agents this year to provide basic services and earn commissions through an agent model.
To cater to tech-savvy taxpayers, KRA has introduced a USSD solution for accessing key services without the need for internet or smartphones. Additionally, the authority has developed a WhatsApp chatbot to support taxpayers with smartphones.
KRA is also decentralising services to improve compliance and reduce access costs. This includes launching reinforced tax education and outreach programs to empower taxpayers.
KRA's efforts to simplify tax processes for small and micro businesses aim to make them easier and cheaper. With the introduction of USSD solutions, WhatsApp chatbots, and plans to recruit agents, the authority is expanding its reach and improving taxpayer experience.
