Late-Life Adoption of MIND Diet Linked to Lower Dementia Risk

Dementia, primarily Alzheimer's disease, currently affects around 57 million people worldwide, with around 60-70% of these cases being Alzheimer's. The MIND (Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay) diet, developed in 2015 by researchers at Rush University Medical Center, has been linked to a reduced risk of dementia in various studies.

The MIND diet is a combination of the Mediterranean and DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diets, focusing on foods that protect brain health. By following this diet, you may decrease your risk of developing cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease, even starting later in life.

In a recent study, researchers analyzed dietary data from nearly 93,000 U.S. adults between the ages of 45 to 75. They found that participants with the highest MIND diet scores at the start of the study had a 9% lower risk of developing dementia. Interestingly, this reduced risk rate jumped to 13% for participants identifying as African American, Latino, or white.

The study implies that adopting a healthy diet, such as the MIND diet, in mid-to-late life can prevent Alzheimer's and related dementias. This suggests that it's never too late to adopt a healthy diet to prevent dementia.
