Lithium-Ion Battery Fires in Japan: 400 Incidents, 5 Injured, CATL and Tesla Suspected

Defective lithium-ion battery products have caused numerous fires in Japan, with at least 100 incidents between 2019 and 2022. The Consumer Affairs Agency has linked these fires to recalled products, including portable chargers, power-assisted bicycle batteries, and personal computers. Chinese battery maker CATL and Tesla, which uses CATL's batteries, are suspected of involvement. A recent incident on the JR Yamanote Line in Tokyo injured five people. Lawyer Nakamura Masato has called for improved recall notification methods to ensure consumer safety.

The Consumer Affairs Agency has reported at least 400 fires linked to lithium-ion battery products since 2019. These fires have caused injuries and property damage, highlighting the urgent need for effective recall notifications. Manufacturers and distributors currently decide how to notify the public, which may not effectively reach consumers. Nakamura Masato, a lawyer, has proposed repeated emails or postcards to ensure consumers receive recall information. The suspected manufacturers, including CATL and Tesla, have a responsibility to ensure their products are safe and that consumers are adequately informed about recalls.

The frequency of fires caused by recalled lithium-ion battery products in Japan is a serious concern. Improved recall notification methods, as suggested by Nakamura Masato, could help prevent future incidents and ensure consumer safety. The suspected manufacturers, CATL and Tesla, must take responsibility and enhance their recall processes to protect consumers.
