Live Blogs Engage Readers Longer in 2023, Despite Lower Recirculation
Live blogs, a format for real-time updates during breaking news events, have shown distinct engagement patterns in 2023. Readers spent more time with live blogs than other content, with a median Average Engaged Time of 48 seconds, compared to just 28 seconds for all content.
This extended time is notable, as 50% of live blogs analysed had Average Engaged Time ranging between 34 and 63 seconds. Despite a lower median recirculation rate of 7%, compared to 11% for news and media sites, live blogs kept readers informed and engaged on major stories such as the Titan submersible and conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza.
Social traffic plays a significant role in driving live blog audiences. 75% of sites averaged at least 14% of traffic from social for live blogs, higher than the 12% average for all content. While recirculation may be lower, the extended time spent on live blogs presents opportunities for publishers to link readers to related articles.
In summary, live blogs in 2023 demonstrated higher reader engagement, with longer Average Engaged Times, and significant social traffic. Despite lower recirculation rates, they remain a valuable tool for keeping audiences informed and engaged during major news events.
