LockBit Leads H1 2024 Ransomware Surge, Demanding $350M

H1 2024 saw a surge in malware attacks, with LockBit leading the charge and Hunters International closely following. The first half of the year witnessed significant disruptions, including cancelled operations and appointments, and a staggering $1 million in total ransom demands.

LockBit was responsible for the highest number of confirmed attacks, with 48 incidents. The group resurfaced in May and quickly became the most prominent threat. Their demands were substantial, with London Drugs in Canada facing a $1 million request. Synnovis, a UK pathology provider, also felt the impact, with a $1 million demand leading to operational disruptions in South East England hospitals.

The biggest malware demand of the period targeted India's Regional Cancer Center, with a staggering $1 million extortion. On average, each attack commanded over $1 million. Hunters International led the pack with nearly 300 verified attacks, while Medusa followed with 31 incidents. Over 35 million records were stolen, with LoanDepot experiencing the highest number affected in a single incident, at 16.9 million.

In a significant development, law enforcement successfully took down LockBit's infrastructure in February.

The first half of 2024 underscored the escalating threat of malware, with LockBit and Hunters International emerging as the most active groups. The substantial financial demands and data breaches highlight the urgent need for robust cybersecurity measures. As malware groups continue to evolve, so too must the global response to combat this persistent threat.
