Lodz University of Technology Wins Gold in Europe-wide Invention Competition for Groundbreaking Project (EUROINVENT 2024)

The Łódź University of Technology (Politechnika Łódzka) stunned the world by winning a Gold Medal at the illustrious European Exhibition of Creativity and Innovation (EUROINVENT) 2024. This prestigious accolade was bestowed upon them for their groundbreaking project, "Composite Material Based on PLA, Its Manufacturing Method, and Application," with patent number PCT/EP2024/052675.

The blockbuster project is part of the "Sustainable Industrial Design of Textile Structures for Composite" initiative, which received funding from the European Union's Horizon Europe program. This award epitomizes the university's unwavering dedication to sustainable development.

The brilliant minds behind the project include Dr. Eng. Paulina Byczkowska, Dr. Emil Saryusz-Wolski, Dr. Hab. Eng. Marcin Barburski, Prof. PŁ, from the Łódź University of Technology, as well as Prof. Nawar Kadi and Prof. Mikael Skrifvars from the University of Boras in Sweden.

This pioneering project is geared towards reducing textile waste by integrating natural fibers into PLA. The researchers are also exploring other natural fibers to refine the PLA mixture and achieve the desired properties for the final product. "This means such materials can be utilized for printing a diverse range of items, including spare parts, packaging, and other environmentally friendly products that require both durability and sustainability," adds Prof. Barburski.

EUROINVENT 2024 showcased over 600 inventions and projects from 34 countries, showcasing the global reach and impact of creative and innovative endeavors.
