Loot-gathering, roguelike dungeon exploration transforms Half-Life 2 in demo from Next Fest mod.
It's bloody 2025, and everything's bloody roguelite these days. Even bloody old games like Half-Life 2 ain't escaping the randomizer and procedural generation trend. But fear not, because the darn good SourceWorld mod is here, and if the recent Steam Next Fest demo is anything to go by, it's bloody fantastic.
You'll be playin' as a down-on-his-luck hitman from a liberated timeline, hopping dimensions and hunatin' Combine remnants across time and space on a shoestring budget. Speakin' of which, you only need the original Half-Life 2 in your Steam account to give this a whirl.
I mentioned SourceWorld in my 2024 roundup of Half-Life 2's most impressive mods, but back then, it was more of a technical proof-of-concept. This latest version on Steam has seen lots of changes, refinements, and a complete rewrite of the procedural map generation system, making the game feel more polished. Half-Life 2's AI has been improved too, so enemies can navigate those dynamic environments more effectively. There's even a tutorial mission and a cleaner, more functional interface to help you get started. It's almost like a retail game from the good old days, but twenty years have passed, and I feel like a relic.
Compared to Gordon Freeman, SourceWorld's protagonist Jack Lunin has a more a Deus Ex-style inventory to juggle. You've got separate slots for helmets, armor, boots, and six customizable weapon slots, as well as as many hotkeys for consumable items. You've only got so much space, so you'll need to be selective about what you pick up while still ensuring you snag valuable items to trade for extra cash between missions.
Combat-wise, this is still Half-Life 2 combat with a few extra twists and a greater focus on close-quarters fighting. You're kicking down doors, dispensing violence, and dishing out lead through a procedurally generated urban maze.
Each map has a variety of objectives, varying levels of hostility, and environmental hazards to keep things interesting. There are some light RPG elements, too, such as perks and a skill tree, allowing you to explore deeper, more dangerous universes.
As far as when we'll see a full, official release of SourceWorld, that's still undecided. The developers have stated in their demo release blog post that they're treating this as a passion project, with development continuing in their free time[1]. They're hoping for a full release sometime next year, but they prefer not to make promises they can't keep[4]. The SourceWorld demo is currently available for download on Steam[4]. Simply go to the mod's store page, find the Download Demo button on the middle-right side, and click away.
