Major Transportation Company Hit by Sophisticated Phishing Scam

A sophisticated phishing campaign has targeted customers of a major transportation company, resulting in significant financial losses. The attack, attributed to the Nigerian cybercrime ring SilverTerrier, exploited a compromised email account and mimicked the company's domain to deceive victims.

The phishing campaign began when an employee's email account was breached, allowing attackers to launch a targeted attack on the company's customers. The attackers registered a new domain that closely resembled the company's legitimate domain, making it difficult for recipients to detect the fraudulent emails. One customer fell victim to the scam, leading to a six-figure financial loss after paying a phony invoice.

Investigations have revealed that the email address [email protected] is connected to at least 240 domains registered in 2024 or 2025. These domains primarily mimic legitimate domains of companies in the aerospace and transportation industries, suggesting a targeted approach. Justy John, associated with the email address [email protected], has been identified as a key figure in registering these phishing domains since at least 2012.

SilverTerrier is known for its proficiency in business email compromise (BEC) scams, which were the second most costly form of cybercrime in 2024, with nearly $2.8 billion in claimed losses. BEC scams involve targeting legitimate business email accounts for financial gain.

Victims of such scams can potentially recover funds by filing complaints with ic3.gov within 72 hours of a fraudulent transfer. The International Financial Fraud Kill Chain (FFKC) offers a 66% success rate in freezing fraudulent funds if complaints are filed promptly. While the identity of the group behind SilverTerrier remains unknown, increased vigilance and prompt reporting can help mitigate the impact of these sophisticated attacks.
