Massive 150 million euro venture: N3 constructs state-of-the-art logistics hub near Erfurter Kreuz
In a significant move, N3 Engine Overhaul Services in Erfurt, Thuringen, has announced the expansion of its facilities. The expansion includes a new logistics center, additional offices, and a cleaning plant for engine parts. This investment, amounting to 150 million euros, is set to create over 30 new workplaces and changing rooms for 560 employees [1][2].
The new logistics center will feature a state-of-the-art high-bay warehouse, standing 26 meters high and 123 meters long. This warehouse will utilise modern technology for automated storage and retrieval of goods, central control of storage processes, and real-time data analysis [3].
N3 specialises in the comprehensive maintenance, repair, and overhaul of aircraft engines, particularly Rolls-Royce Trent engines. The company manages the entire overhaul cycle, including component repair and engine testing, within its Erfurt facility [1]. The engines are typically shipped to N3 rather than dismantled at the airlines' home bases [4].
This centralised approach allows N3 to leverage its specialised technology and expertise efficiently within a single location [1][2][3]. In 2024, N3 achieved a turnover of almost one billion euros, serving over 50 international airlines [5].
Meanwhile, Marquardt, an automotive supplier, has opened a second plant in Thuringia, producing battery management systems for electric vehicles. This three-digit million euro investment will create 200 jobs [6]. Additionally, an app is being developed to facilitate carpooling for commuters and employees at the Erfurter Kreuz industrial estate, aiming to reduce traffic and CO2 emissions [7].
The expansion of these facilities comes amidst a period of economic growth for the Ilm district. Between January and March 2025, the district generated around 1.5 billion euros in turnover, surpassing the Wartburg district [8]. However, not all news is welcomed. Some users have expressed concerns about the impact of these new investments on the landscape and traditional jobs, particularly in the crafts sector [9][10].
