MicroStrategy Bolsters Crypto Portfolio Further with $1.1 Billion Bitcoin Buy
In a move that further solidifies its commitment to Bitcoin as a primary treasury asset, MicroStrategy Inc., with the ticker symbol $MSTR, has announced the acquisition of 10,107 Bitcoins between January 21 and 26, 2025.
The acquisitions were financed primarily through at-the-market (ATM) offerings of the company's preferred stocks (STRK and STRF), following shareholder-approved increases in authorized shares to enable these offerings. This strategic approach allows MicroStrategy to incrementally increase its Bitcoin holdings without depleting traditional cash reserves.
The average acquisition price of Bitcoin was around $64,511 per coin, with the average price paid for each Bitcoin being approximately $105,596. As of the announcement, MicroStrategy holds 471,107 BTC, making it one of the largest corporate holders of the cryptocurrency.
At press time, Bitcoin is trading around $101,300, resulting in an overall investment of approximately $1.1 billion for the newly acquired Bitcoins. This latest purchase brings MicroStrategy's total investment in Bitcoin since August 2020 to $30.4 billion.
The company also disclosed plans to redeem $1.05 billion in convertible bonds due 2027, with the proceeds from the sale expected to fund operational expenses and further Bitcoin purchases.
Despite the significant investment in Bitcoin, MicroStrategy still holds unsold shares amounting to $4.35 billion in potential proceeds. The company's Bitcoin Yield for YTD 2025 remains at 2.90%.
This financial strategy reflects MicroStrategy’s commitment to Bitcoin accumulation funded by equity market mechanisms rather than cash or debt, balancing shareholder dilution against the goal of increasing cryptocurrency exposure. The company's ongoing Bitcoin purchases aim to capitalize on potential long-term value appreciation and maintain a leading position among Bitcoin treasury holders.
- MicroStrategy's financial strategy, as evident in its recent Bitcoin acquisition, demonstrates a primary focus on investing in the cryptocurrency, leveraging technology, and funding these purchases mostly through preferred stocks offerings, such as STRK and STRF.
- With these strategic Bitcoin acquisitions, MicroStrategy has significantly increased its Bitcoin holdings, reaching over 471,000 BTC, thereby positioning itself as one of the largest corporate holders of the cryptocurrency in finance, following a commitment to cryptocurrency accumulation funded by equity market mechanisms rather than cash or debt.
