NFC Game Loading on Commodore 64 via TeensyROM Script

In a fusion of nostalgia and contemporary innovation, a novel hack transforms the Commodore 64 into a console-esque system, reminiscent of modern consoles with physical game cards. Inspired by the TapTo system for MiSTer, this development leverages Near Field Communication (NFC) technology to breathe new life into real hardware using the TeensyROM.

The heart of this project remains the TeensyROM cartridge, now altered via firmware enhancement to support NFC tag reading. These tags in question are writable NTag215 cards containing paths to game files stored on the Teensy's SD card. By simply tapping an NFC tag to the integrated NFC reader, the TeensyROM boots the corresponding game, offering an engaging "tap-to-load" experience. This convenience is particularly beneficial for retro demo setups.

What distinguishes this project is the introduction of tangible game tokens. Each game resides on its own custom-designed card, emulating the appearance of PC Engine HuCards or featuring holographic vinyl prints. These cards not only serve as practical game selectors, but they also pay homage to the golden days of floppy disks and cartridges while boasting 2020s technology. For a demonstration, watch the footage shared by StatMat, developer of this project in collaboration with Sensorium.

To implement this system, acquire or assemble a TeensyROM cartridge compatible with the Commodore 64. Integrate an NFC reader module, flash the cartridge with modified firmware, program NFC tags with game paths, design and print physical cards, and tap them to the NFC reader to instantly load and run games on the vintage Commodore 64. This solution offers a refreshing blend of nostalgic physical gaming media with contemporary NFC technology for an enhanced retro gaming experience.
