Indy Mellink, a PhD student based in Rotterdam, has made waves in the world of gaming with her innovative creation - a deck of playing cards that challenges traditional stereotypes and promotes inclusivity. Launched in October 2020, Mellink's GSB Cards have gained significant momentum following a feature in Holland's national paper.

The idea for the cards was sparked when Mellink, while explaining the rules of a card game to her younger cousin, realised the archaic and unjust ranking system in traditional decks. Determined to make a change, Mellink, inspired by Elon Musk, whom she considered a role model as a teenager, took action and set out to create a more representative and welcoming deck of cards.

Mellink, who has experience in graphic design, has replaced the King, Queen, and Jack cards with a royal couple, a prince and princess, and a farming couple, respectively. Instead of using traditional names, she has chosen to use Gold, Silver, and Bronze cards, inspired by universal symbols used in sporting events.

The new deck has sparked a debate about gender and race issues, with responses being very mixed. Some people welcome a modern take on the classic deck, finding the traditional deck non-inclusive. However, others argue that the gender neutral deck is unnecessary and draw attention to a problem that doesn't matter or even exist.

Mellink understands the impact of subtle messaging and believes that traditional card decks perpetuate inequalities. She responds to such claims by explaining that while it may seem insignificant, micro aggressions like these contribute to the bigger picture of oppression.

Despite facing online trolling as a result of increased media attention, Mellink remains undeterred. She aims to replace the traditional deck of cards, not as a replacement but as an additional option for those seeking a more inclusive approach to gaming.

As people look forward to seeing where Mellink and her cards go from here, it is clear that her work has already made a significant impact. By challenging traditional stereotypes and promoting inclusivity, Mellink's GSB Cards have gained significant attention and are sure to continue to do so in the future.

In the realm of lifestyle blogging, Indy Mellink's innovative GSB Cards might find a spot, offering a fusion of technology and social advocacy. This could inspire thought pieces on fashion-and-beauty blogs about the collision of tradition and inclusivity in modern gaming. Meanwhile, a tech-focused blog might delve into the design process and technological aspects of Mellink's deck, exploring its potential to influence the casino industry.
