Nordhorn Gives Cyclists Right-of-Way at Major Intersections

Nordhorn has implemented a significant change to its cycling infrastructure. Cyclists now have the right-of-way at two major intersections, following the city's successful 'Comfort Bike Paths' project.

The project, part of Nordhorn's broader bicycle traffic concept, has seen the city nominated for the German Bicycle Prize 2018. Nordhorn secured third place for its innovative approach to cycling infrastructure.

The 'Comfort Bike Paths' initiative includes a seven-kilometer path that has been transformed to prioritize cyclists. This path, inspired by Bremen's 'Comfort Bike Path', features a consistent right-hand traffic rule for cyclists. Two intersections, Heseper Way and Frensdorferhaar, have been redesigned to reflect this change.

The path's most popular section received an additional lane last year, ensuring the preservation of old alley trees. Cyclists have long enjoyed uninterrupted journeys along the Nordhorn-Almelo and connecting canals, thanks to underpasses that eliminate the need for stops at other intersections.

Nordhorn's commitment to enhancing cycling infrastructure has resulted in cyclists now having the right-of-way at two key intersections. This change, part of the city's wider 'Comfort Bike Paths' project, aims to improve cycling safety and convenience. The project's success has been recognized nationally, with Nordhorn securing third place in the German Bicycle Prize 2018.
