Northvolt's Revolt Ett Recycling Plant Starts Operations, Cutting Carbon Footprint

Northvolt's Revolt Ett recycling plant has begun processing materials, marking a significant step in reducing carbon footprint. The plant, adjacent to the Northvolt Ett gigafactory, is recovering battery-grade metals with a 70% lower carbon footprint than mined raw materials.

This development aligns with the EU's regulatory goals to localise battery production and secure supply chains. Northvolt, a leading European battery maker, is already supplying Volvo production in Sweden and Belgium from its Skellefteå plant.

Peter Carlsson, Northvolt's CEO and co-founder, expressed excitement about the Revolt Ett project, which he is personally leading. The company announced a $5 billion project in January to expand both the gigafactory and recycling plant. Meanwhile, Volvo has established a joint venture, Novo, with Northvolt, to construct a gigafactory in Gothenburg, set to begin production exclusively for Volvo in 2026.

Northvolt's commitment to sustainability extends to its energy source. The company will use wind power to generate renewable energy for its battery cell production, further supporting the climate transition.

The start of operations at Revolt Ett recycling plant signals a major advancement in sustainable battery production. With backing from European leaders like Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who emphasised the strategic importance of such investments, Northvolt continues to drive the continent's battery cell production, supporting both the climate transition and the EU's regulatory goals.
