OpenAI Unveils Real-Time Models, Expands Codex, Introduces ChatGPT Apps

OpenAI has revealed a range of new products and updates at its annual developer conference in San Francisco. The company introduced real-time voice and image models, expanded its AI coding agent Codex, and launched new tools for developers.

OpenAI started the event by announcing gpt-realtime-mini and gpt-image-1-mini, real-time voice and image models that promise cost savings without compromising quality. These models join the existing API, now featuring GPT-5 Pro, OpenAI's most powerful AI model to date.

The company also launched Codex into general availability, following its introduction last year. Codex is an AI coding agent that can generate code in over a dozen languages. To simplify integration, OpenAI has added a Slack integration and an SDK for embedding Codex tools into CI/CD pipelines and other tools.

A standout announcement was the introduction of apps in ChatGPT. Third-party apps from Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Expedia, Figma, Spotify, and Zillow can now be invoked within the ChatGPT interface. This expansion is made possible by two new tools: AgentKit and ChatKit.

AgentKit is a no-code agent builder that enables developers to create agents and multiagent systems with minimal effort. It integrates with OpenAI's Evals tool for testing prompts and measuring AI behavior. ChatKit, on the other hand, is a toolkit for embedding agent experiences into apps. Both tools were presented by OpenAI's founder and CEO, Sam Altman.

OpenAI's annual developer conference has brought significant updates to its AI models and tools. The launch of real-time voice and image models, the general availability of Codex, and the introduction of apps in ChatGPT demonstrate the company's commitment to expanding the capabilities of its AI. With AgentKit and ChatKit, OpenAI is also making it easier for developers to create and integrate AI agents into their applications.
