OpenAI's Sora 2 Brings AI-Generated Content to Social Media
OpenAI's latest venture, Sora 2, is an invite-only social media app that allows users to share AI-generated content. The app, powered by OpenAI's AI video generator Sora, is currently available to iPhone users and will soon expand to Android devices.
Sora 2, set to launch in the U.S. and Canada on September 30, 2025, for iOS users, will initially be invite-only. Each user receives four invite codes to share with friends. The app's AI videos, when shared on other platforms, will bear a watermark for recognition as AI-generated content.
The app's new feature, Cameo, enables users to insert their or others' faces into AI-generated scenes. This comes as AI becomes increasingly integrated into social media, with Meta also focusing on AI-generated content. OpenAI has explored the idea of a social media app before, as reported by The Verge and Wired.
Sora 2 aims to foster human connection but may still feature AI-generated content, or 'AI slop'. OpenAI is starting with conservative content moderation, including guardrails against X-rated and graphic content. Android users can currently access the app via web browser with an invite code, with a planned release for Android devices at a later date.
