Over 5,600 Road Safety Violations Caught in Manchester Trial

Over 5,600 road safety violations were recorded in Manchester, with 2,393 incidents of seat belt non-compliance and 812 drivers caught using mobile phones. The 'Heads Up' AI camera system, part of Manchester's Vision Zero Strategy, was used to detect these offences during a recent trial.

The trial, aiming to understand the extent of distracted driving and seat belt non-compliance, used state-of-the-art cameras. Over 3,200 drivers were caught breaking road safety laws. The 'Heads Up' system, utilising AI to detect potential lawbreakers, played a significant role in these findings.

The data gathered during the trial has not yet led to prosecutions. Instead, it will be used to raise awareness of the consequences of not complying with road safety laws. The Fatal 4 leading causes of serious injury and death on UK roads include mobile phone usage and not wearing a seat belt, both of which increase the risk of collisions and fatalities.

The trial has highlighted the prevalence of seat belt non-compliance and mobile phone use while driving in Manchester. The data will inform future campaigns and enforcement strategies, contributing to the Vision Zero Strategy's goal of eliminating road deaths and life-changing injuries by 2040.
