'Path of Exile 2': Savor the Thrill of Tedium in Its Frustratingly Time-Consuming Endgame

Venturing closer to the 200-hour mark in Path of Exile 2, I've levelled up my character to an 89 ranger and a 90 Monk. These bad boys can obliterate everything so fast, it makes Elon Musk green with envy. However, as I delve deeper, the aggravation grows – the ultra-endgame appears to be more about time-wasting than providing a genuine challenge.

I've previously ranted about the irritating aspects of the midgame endgame in Path of Exile 2, including the harsh consequences of dying on a map. Losing XP, modifiers, Waystones, and progress can be a substantial setback, but as your character grows stronger, these losses become more manageable.

However, once you graduate from simple mapping, the main objective becomes hunting down Citadels to confront beefed-up campaign bosses. Citadels are, unfortunately, a headache for two reasons. First and foremost, finding them is a chaotic, frustrating quest. You're left to blindly traverse the maps in hopes of stumbling upon one of the three variations. It's a Golum-style "My Precious" hunt, and the "right" one can take dozens of maps and even more hours to find.

But even when chance smiles upon you and you find a Citadel, failure can prove catastrophic. These maps are yours for one chance only, and one misstep can lead to an instant death. You'll forfeit the entire Citadel encounter, along with the precious modifiers and progress you've made. If you're unlucky enough to run into the same scenario again – and I've been there, I've wasted countless hours in pursuit of the elusive second opportunity – finding another Citadel can be like piecing together a long-lost Rubik's cube.

Then there's the ultimate boss of the entire game, with its own share of one-shot mechanics and staggering time and currency investment. The risk of punishing failure is even higher in this instance, as one misstep can erase all your efforts – an impossible cliff to climb back from.

It's disheartening that finding Citadels is almost entirely reliant on luck, and the punishment for failure is so steep. Ideally, there would be a way to track down these elusive locations more efficiently, and the consequences for failure would be less harsh.

In my quest for the next Citadel in Path of Exile 2, the frustration of relying on sheer luck to stumble upon one persists, making me wish for a more systematic approach. Despite the potential for catastrophic consequences if I make a single mistake during the encounter, I can't help but feel drawn to the ultimate boss, eager to overcome its one-shot mechanics and substantial time and currency investment.
