Pope Leo Expresses Concerns Over AI and Rejects Proposal for an "AI Pope"

Pope Leo, the newly elected leader of the Catholic Church, has voiced his concerns about the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on human identity and humanity as a whole. In an interview with journalist and author Elise Allen, the pontiff shared his decision to not authorize the creation of an AI version of himself, citing potential risks to human dignity and identity.

During the interview, Pope Leo expressed his belief that AI has a significant relationship with human dignity. He warned about the potential dangers of relying too heavily on AI, particularly in relation to employment. If the entire world is automated, leaving only a few people with means, there is a potential for a "huge problem", he said.

The pontiff's concerns extend beyond employment, as he has repeatedly voiced his worries about the well-being of children and young people in relation to AI. He believes that AI has the power to impact human identity in profound ways, and that it is crucial to ensure that these developments serve humanity rather than undermine it.

In addition to the interview with Elise Allen, Pope Leo had a phone call with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on May 15. During their discussion, the focus was on the development of ethical artificial intelligence. The pontiff and the prime minister are working together to ensure that AI serves humanity and promotes human dignity.

Pope Leo's concerns about AI are not new. In mid-September 2025, he rejected a proposal to create an "artificial pope" for personal audiences, stating that such technology could seriously undermine human identity. He also expressed his belief that he should not be represented by an avatar.

Despite these concerns, Pope Leo remains optimistic about the potential benefits of AI. He believes that with careful consideration and ethical guidelines, AI can be a powerful tool for good. He is committed to working with leaders and experts to ensure that AI is developed in a way that respects and protects human dignity.
