ScotRail Trials Starlink Satellite Internet on Passenger Trains

ScotRail, the railway operator in Scotland, has initiated a six-month trial of Starlink satellite internet on its passenger trains. This groundbreaking move aims to enhance connectivity on Scotland's most remote rail lines, promising a vastly improved Wi-Fi experience for passengers and potential improvements in operational safety and maintenance efficiency.

The trial is the first use of Starlink satellite connectivity for onboard rail passenger Wi-Fi in the UK. The initial phase involves equipping six Class 158 trains with Starlink's Rigid Terminal, a device specifically designed for in-motion use in challenging environments like trains, with features supporting high speeds, vibration, and temperature variations.

Starlink's constellation of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites provides reliable, high-speed internet access even in areas far from urban centers. The Rigid Terminal has undergone extensive testing to meet rail industry standards for vibration, altitude, and harsh weather conditions.

The Starlink Performance Kit is designed for such in-motion use, making it a viable solution for reliable broadband on trains, as described by some railway users and providers. However, as of mid-2025, there is no publicly available information confirming trials specifically on Brightline in the US, Vivi in Latvia, or Czech Railways.

This transformation in connectivity will change how passengers can stay connected while traveling on Scotland's Railway. If successful, the technology could be expanded to other rural ScotRail lines, making it possible for customers using ScotRail trains in the Scottish Highlands to have unprecedented access to satellite technology.

The Starlink service on ScotRail trains was recently switched on by Business Minister, Richard Lochhead MSP. The terminal has already been deployed on ScotRail's measurement trains for real-time vehicle diagnostics and remote monitoring of track infrastructure.

This trial is part of a growing trend of railway operators adopting satellite-based solutions to overcome connectivity gaps. As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, reliable internet access is no longer a luxury but a necessity, especially in remote areas. The success of this trial could pave the way for similar initiatives across the UK and beyond.

  1. The adoption of satellite-based solutions for reliable internet access, like Starlink, by the railway industry signals a shift in prioritizing connectivity gaps, especially in remote areas, as technology advancements make it a necessity, not a luxury.
  2. The adaptation of data-and-cloud-computing technologies, such as Starlink's Performance Kit, could significantly improve transportation systems like public-transit and the automotive industry, by enhancing real-time monitoring and diagnostic capabilities.
  3. In finance, the potential increased efficiency in rail maintenance could lead to cost savings for railway operators, such as ScotRail, which in turn may contribute to the growth of their respective economies, as transportation system advancements often stimulate broader progress.
