Refurbished X-Men '97 Trailer Offers Retribution for 24-Year-Old Humorous Reference

In the heart of every epic X-Men tale, something incredible emerges from the ashes like a Phoenix rising. And it's never been more evident than now, with the Fox X-Men movie era evolving into a new age for mutantkind, coursing through X-Men '97. The show doesn't shy away from its witty awareness, winking at us as if to say, "We get it, we know we're cool."

Marvel recently unleashed another thrilling trailer for X-Men '97's explosive debut season, gearing up for its jaw-dropping three-part finale, "Tolerance Is Extinction". Although there isn't much new in it, it mostly puts a spotlight on scenes from previously aired episodes, sprinkling tantalizing glimpses of fresh encounters, such as Jubilee and Sunspot escape from an enraged mob and the X-Men battling sleek, human-like Prime Sentinels following their run-in with the transformed Bolivar Trask. The trailer concludes on a high note, too.

Enter Nathan Summers, alias Cable, Scott and Madelyne's offspring from a few weeks back (yeah, superhero timelines). He's back to lend a hand to our X-Men for their impending battle. Cyclops welcomes him back with a nifty uniform. "What did you expect?" Cyclops quips. "Black leather?" This exchange is a cheeky acknowledgement of the ever-evolving nature of adapting source material, reminiscent of Bryan Singer's 2000 X-Men movie, where Wolverine's grumbles over the team's black leather get-up are countered with a sarcastic question about preferring yellow Spandex.

It's fascinating how we've returned full circle, moving from mocking the goofy source material for these stories, to embracing it wholeheartedly. This transition is particularly evident in X-Men '97, given its status as the series that bridges the Fox movie era - from X-Men: The Animated Series in the early '90s to '97 being the first X-project since Disney acquired Fox in 2019. Yes, Cable, now we're all ready for the Spandex-and X-Men '97 knows it.

Catch X-Men '97 on Disney every Wednesday, starting May 1, for the first part of "Tolerance Is Extinction".
