OpenAI Disables ChatGPT Indexing Feature Due to Privacy Concerns

OpenAI, the company behind the popular AI model ChatGPT, has recently announced the removal of a feature that allowed ChatGPT conversations to be discoverable by search engines. This decision was made following the appearance of thousands of such chats in Google search results, including personal details about mental health, relationships, and other sensitive topics.

The feature, which was a short-lived experiment introduced earlier in 2025, allowed users to manually enable their chats to be shown in web searches. It was quietly introduced, with help documentation changing between April 26 and April 28 to clarify that users could opt-in to this indexing. However, the April 26, 2025 version of the help page did not have this option.

The option to make chats discoverable appeared within the share function window of ChatGPT. Users could navigate to the ChatGPT page, click on settings, data controls, and then the manage button next to "Shared links" to access this feature.

OpenAI's Chief Information Security Officer, Dane Stuckey, stated that the feature was a "short-lived experiment" to help people discover useful conversations. However, it seems that some people may have enabled the option without fully understanding its implications. Stuckey also noted that the feature had opportunities to be enabled accidentally.

Despite the removal of the feature, users can still delete their ChatGPT shared links. However, it may not immediately remove conversations from Google or other search engines. ChatGPT is currently working to remove the indexed content from search engines.

The current help page from OpenAI still mentions the option to have chats indexed, but it needs to be updated to reflect the change that's being rolled out. OpenAI removed the feature that allowed ChatGPT conversations to be indexed and searchable by Google and other search engines by the end of July 2025 or very early August 2025.

This removal was announced and rolled out around July 31 to August 5, 2025, following Fast Company's report of thousands of indexed conversations. The feature was active roughly from early 2025 until late July/early August 2025, lasting only several months before being withdrawn due to privacy and security concerns associated with accidental public sharing of private conversations.
